"What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?"
Answer:
Man. He crawls on all hands and knees as a baby, walks on two legs as an adult, and walks using a cane in his old age.
As the riddle above alludes to, this and the next module are about human growth and development all the way from fertilization to old age. We will be looking at this through the teachings of Piaget, Freud, and Erickson amongst others.
The Essential Question
"Can parents encourage giftedness in their children?"
Stages of Development
Read pp. 388-398 Take notes on Piaget and Erickson. Now their respective stages of cognitive and social development.
By now you should be on your way to attempting to answer the question above. Well, we know now that parents and other care givers are really important to a child's development. Take a good look at the videos below. The first is for fun, but as you watch consider what sorts of skills that infant is developing or has developed. The second features Patricia Kuhl speaking to the critical period of language acquisition (yep, you acquire your mother tongue). This is pretty heady stuff, but I am sure you will enjoy the information she so eloquently presents. Great information, but know that only three decades ago linguists and psychologists saw first hand that if language is not developed during a critical period, then no language, foreign or mother tongue, will ever be learned. Such as the case of Genie.
